We live in a materialistic world with modern advertising encouraging us to look out for number one – me. Too often we’re consumed with what we’re going to eat or wear. To get it, we’ll work our tails off or rip others off because we need what advertisers say we should have. Jesus said in Matthew 6:25-34 that Solomon worked pretty hard, or had the population he ruled work hard, to accumulate the material wealth to build the opulent palace he lived in and the temple he worshiped in. People travelled from far and wide just to see the beauty of it all. Then Jesus said, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them…See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” He reminded them that the pagans worry about and run after material things. As believers in Christ we shouldn’t follow the patterns of the pagans, because our heavenly Father knows what we need. So what should we have as priorities in our lives? “Seek first the Father’s kingdom,” Jesus said, “and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” God knows we need to eat – Jesus taught us to ask for daily bread, remember? God wants us to dress appropriately. Trust Him to provide. If God takes care of birds and colorful flowers, will He not take care of His own children? Of course He will. So prioritize these two things in your heart – His kingdom and His righteousness.
