Jesus gave an interesting picture explanation of what He was teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, especially in Matthew 6. He had encouraged depositing treasure in heaven if you wanted your treasure to endure and pointed out that wherever your treasure was there your heart would be also. Amplifying this point in Matthew 6:22-23 He talks about the eye being a lamp or window to the innermost essence of who you are. I found a great rendition of this in a paraphrased version called The Message: “Your eyes are windows into your body. If you open your eyes wide in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. If you pull the blinds on your windows, what a dark life you will have!” How true. It reminds me of what is found in John 3:16-21, especially verses 19-21: This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” Jesus is the light of the world, God’s love gift to us. If we come to Him, behold Him in all of His glory, and invite Him into our lives, He will fill us with His light. If we don’t, we will remain in darkness and spiritual death. Open your eyes, look by faith to Jesus Christ, and experience abundant and eternal life.
