When Jesus gives instructions about praying in the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7, He discusses both the content of our praying and the audience we seek to address in our prayers. People might be impressed with the way you pray in public. If you curry their affirmations then like the Pharisee in Luke 18:11 you will, as the margin in your Bible puts it, pray to yourself. Again Jesus put it bluntly, “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” God is not impressed with what praise or honor others bestow upon you. In fact, He is not impressed with our efforts to persuade Him to give you what you’re asking for. He sees what is in the secret place in your heart. He wants you to authentically come to Him in humility and faith. If you are unclear about what to pray, Jesus says, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’” This includes worship, a desire to see God’s will done, a request to meet our basic needs, asking for forgiveness and deliverance, and again, worship. Let this be a template for getting alone and coming to God in prayer.
