We have been trying to understand the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7 by looking through the prism of the impact word, “secret.” We’re often impressed with someone who appears to be a good person by what we see in his actions. But if those actions are motivated by the person wanting to be recognized and affirmed as a good person, in Jesus words, “They have their reward,” but not the blessing of God. For example, people who are merciful will not pass judgment on others without first trying to understanding their motives. They see themselves as having mixed motives at times and therefore are more willing to give others the benefit of doubt. When Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart,” that is a quality of heart only God can see. It is a secret or hidden from everyone else. Others can’t enter into the blessing the pure in heart receive when they see God in a new way. When Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers,” He knew that to be effective in being peacemakers they would need to know peace with God in their own innermost being. When they experience this it is such a blessing they would want others to experience it, even if only in personal relationships. They would be willing, if they sensed God prompting them, to encourage them to seek peace with God, but not force it. Contrived peace doesn’t reflect the peace God offers. Generally others won’t understand those who are blessed of God and this often provokes negative reactions. If this happens to you, remember, God sees your heart and will help you understand and endure.
