In our last visit we saw, based on Philippians 3:20, that God wants us to build our lives on the foundation of being citizens of heaven. That assurance helps us emotionally detach from depending on the things of this world. Enjoy what God has provided, but detach from dependence on it. Focus on the promise of Christ’s return. Paul told the Colossians to “set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:1-2). Why is this important? Philippians 3:21 talks about “our lowly bodies.” Dr. Kenneth Wuest writes in his commentary, “the Greek word means…‘lowly, humiliated, of humble origin.’ These physical bodies of ours have death in them, and sickness, and weakness…The mind of Adam, functioning perfectly before the fall, was wrecked by sin. The sense functions, operating perfectly before the fall, became debilitated after he sinned. As such, our present bodies are imperfect mediums through which the regenerated Spirit-filled inner life of the believer seeks unsuccessfully to express itself in the fullest measure. The Greek word speaks of the unfitness of our present bodies to fulfill the claims of the spiritual life.” That’s the struggle we all face in seeking to live as we ought. But there’s coming a day when that will all change. “Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body” (Philippians 3:21). Now that’s something to look forward to!
