We come now to a very important quality in the list enumerated in 2nd Peter 1:5-11. Why should we add to our faith goodness, knowledge, self – control and perseverance? Peter says, so that we will grow in our experiential knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord. And why add the next quality, godliness? When you research the etymology of this quality it is associated with worship that is rightly directed, “Worth-ship,” or reverence paid to worth. The picture Peter wants us to have in our minds as we go about living our lives in relationship to others and in tasks performed is twofold. First, we should do everything as an expression of worship. Paul declared in a number of places that “whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Second, the outcome is to be an acknowledgment and affirmation of God’s worth, not only in our own hearts but also in the hearts of those who are impacted by our efforts. Let me remind you of what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Jesus set this pattern in His own life. As he came to the stretch of His earthly mission He offered what is known as His High Priestly Prayer in John 17. He had laid aside His own glory as the Son of God in order to enter His earthly journey. Now, at the end of His journey, He prayed, “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” That is how you add godliness to your faith. Bring God glory in all you do.
