In our last visit I pointed out that honoring each other in the family cultivates humility as well as a healthy self-worth in each member of the family. It also honors and pleases God and elicits His blessing on the family. During the coming weeks let me encourage you to find tangible ways to affirm and honor each other in your family. Listen carefully as they share their hearts and plans. Try to understand what motivates them. Pray that they might understand their own potential and learn how to make the most of their opportunities. Share insights to help them succeed. When you affirm them ask God to help you do it in a non – condescending way. Let them know you are genuinely enthused about what you see in them and anticipate for them. Ask God to give you the sensitivity to determine the right time and way to honor them. Do this personally, either face to face, or by writing it up for them to read in private. Or do it publicly so others will be able to join in the affirmation, like in a toast. I believe this is what Solomon had in mind when he wrote in Proverbs 25:11, “A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” And Proverbs 15:23, “How good is a timely word.” Sometimes it’s best if the timely word comes second hand from someone who heard you affirm and honor a person. This might be the greatest gift they ever receive! Being a parent, grandparent, and now great grandparent, I can attest to the heart-warming blessing it is when this happens to you.
