Responsible parenting is tough. And it doesn’t get easier as children grow older. It’s natural and healthy for them to want freedom to do their own thing, but with this freedom they often make mistakes. As a youngster “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52). We need to train our children to be intellectually and physically healthy. It’s also important for them to be spiritually and socially healthy. As they grow older there comes a time when we need to free them to make independent decisions. If they make wise decisions they will avoid the scars and bruises bad decisions often bring. But learning how to make wise decisions involves more than theory, even theory based on truth. They need freedom to make mistakes and experience the consequences. 1 Corinthians 6:12 says, “Everything is permissible for me – but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me – but I will not be mastered by anything.” The prodigal son learned this the hard way. His father allowed him to make a short sighted choice. Waiting for him to learn the hard way was painful. But when his son came to his senses and returned home broken and repentant his father readily welcomed and restored him. Discerning when to give children freedom, even to make mistakes, is hard. But there comes a time when it is necessary for them through experience to develop maturity intellectually, socially and spiritually.
