In our last two visits we have begun a “4S” (step) study of Mark 11: spread, sort, structure, summarize. We spread out the facts in the chapter before us and sorted them into groups. We identified three groups: praise, prayer and power. Then we used these points to structure the information into an outline. Next, we listed some things under the first point, praise. Now let’s consider the matter of prayer as found in this chapter. Jesus points out that the temple was to be a “house of prayer.” In fact, it was to be a place where prayer would go up “for all nations” (vs. 17). But for prayer to be effectual it had to be a place of holiness, so Jesus cleared the temple of what He identified as being characteristic of “a den of robbers.” Then, growing out of the incident of the withering fig tree, Jesus taught more about prayer. It is to be expressed in faith and from a forgiving heart. The faith issue described here always challenges me: “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (vs. 24). This is not faith in prayer. It is faith in God (vs. 22). There is a strong emphasis on expressing verbally what you desire from God. But that expression must come from a tender, forgiven and forgiving heart. If you don’t have this kind of heart attitude it will stand in God’s way to answer your prayer: “When you stand praying, if you; hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” Without question, the point Jesus makes is that prayer opens the door to miraculous happenings.
