In our last visit we considered the impact statement found in Mark 6:31, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Jesus was counseling His disciples, “You have been living beyond your energy margins and your tank is almost dry. You need to get alone, with me, to a quiet place and get some rest. This is how to refill your energy reservoir. Get alone. With Jesus. To a quiet place. Get some rest.” When was the last time you did this? It sounds so simple, but the remainder of Mark 6 illustrates how hard it is, especially when your tank gauge reads “empty.” Notice that the people actually ran ahead to the place where the disciples and Jesus were going to get alone and rest. The crowd around you usually doesn‘t notice or care about your need for rest – they’re preoccupied with their need and want you to meet it. After Jesus and the disciples did meet their need Jesus took special care to get the disciples away from the crowd by having them leave by boat while He dismissed the crowd. That didn’t solve the problem, because while on the lake a storm blew in causing them to strain at the oars. Obviously this was not a restful situation. The point is – it’s hard to get alone, with Jesus, to a quiet place and get some rest. Even natural phenomenon will at times frustrate our efforts. I’ve noticed this when my family has taken time to get away for vacation. Often inclement weather or storms frustrate the best made plans. But no matter how difficult it might get, we need to monitor our energy reservoir level. If it gets low we must take steps to get alone, with Jesus, and rest. If we don’t we’ll get stressed out and be less than our best, and possibly even experience burnout or breakdown. Make time, get alone with Jesus in a quiet place and rest.
