There is always something special about going back to your own hometown. But that something special might not be the warm welcome we anticipate. In Mark 6 Jesus went to His hometown accompanied by His disciples. As was His custom on the Sabbath He went to the synagogue and began to teach. Many who heard Him were amazed. They didn’t expect such wisdom nor the power to perform miracles. His family had not changed but He sure seemed to be different. And the Bible says, they took offense at Him. Why? Possibly His abilities or authority threatened them. It seems like their attitude caused their faith to be anemic. Since faith opens the door for Jesus to do His thing in our lives it says in Mark 6:5, “He could not do any miracles there.” The disciples saw Jesus sowing seed, but it obviously fell on hard, pathway like soil. Only a few were healed. They represented seed falling on good soil. Very little of good happened in his hometown. But note, even though He said that a prophet is without honor in his own town, He did sow some seed there. He was practicing what He taught. Not all seed sown will bear a harvest, not even all seed that Jesus sowed while He ministered on hearth. But faithful sowing likely will result in some responding and becoming fruitful. Note also that when Jesus sent out His disciples in verses 7-13 He warned them that the going was not going to be easy, they would indeed have to live by faith, and there would be times when they would be rejected or rebuffed. But they were to go forth and faithfully fulfill their assigned tasks. That’s all God asks of us too. Remember, God is fully responsible for the results of our obedience.
