We’ve been doing a study of Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.” This study by no means has been exhaustive. Every now and then, let me encourage you to reflect on the implications and application of this verse to your life. Habakkuk the prophet did so, as seen in 2:20 of his prophecy, “The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.” As he reflected on this powerful truth he was prompted to pray. His prayer is recorded in chapter 3 of the book of Habakkuk. Listen to how he begins his prayer: “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O Lord. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” You can’t stand in God’s awesome presence without your heart being touched. You want to know experientially what others experienced when they spent time in His presence. The heart begins to cry out, “Do it again, O God. Do it again!” In fact the cry becomes, “Do it again in our time, now!” But as you cry out to God in this impassioned way it is not unusual to realize afresh our own unworthiness. We don’t deserve God doing anything wonderful or awe inspiring in our lives. We deserve judgment. In fact that was what God had told Habakkuk. But when the prophet realized what God was going to justly do, His cry became, “In wrath remember mercy.” Mercy is when God doesn’t do what we deserve. Habakkuk’s prayer would be appropriate to pray for yourself, your church, and the church throughout the world. May God do it again by showing mercy toward us in our day!
