We’ve considered some practical principles based on our study of  1Samuel 25. Let’s look at another, captured in Proverbs 20:15, “lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.”

It’s clear, the servant who noticed what was happening and discerned that an impending disaster was about to befall his master’s household had lips that spoke knowledge. He shared what he knew with his master’s wife, Abigail, and commended her by how he presented her with a challenge to do what she could to avert the danger. His action was the linchpin step that turned an impending disaster into a miraculous deliverance. Truly, his lips were a rare jewel amidst a hopeless situation.

Inspired by his compelling appeal Abigail likewise manifested “lips that speak knowledge.” Un-mistakenly they were a rare jewel. Listen to David’s response to her wise and persuasive appeal: “”Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands” (1 Samuel 25:32-33).

Solomon was right in Proverbs 16:21, “The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction,” or as the margin notes, “make a man persuasive.” David knew better than to avenge himself.

“The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out” (Proverbs 20:5). The servant’s words drew out the best in Abigail. Her words drew out the best in David.

Yes, “lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.”
