In our last visit we noted a discovery that our missionary friend, Joanie Yoder shared: “Faith is the waiting room of sight.” This helps us picture Hebrews 11:1, “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen,” and appreciate some of those who exhibited faith in Old Testament times.

The writer of Hebrews 11 begins his presentation with his definition of faith. It is important to understand this definition clearly since all the illustrations following in the chapter are built upon it.

Commentator Vincent believes “the key is furnished by verse 27, as seeing him who iinvisible. Faith apprehends as a real fact what is not revealed to the senses. It rests on that fact, acts upon it, and is upheld by it in the face of all that seems to contradict it. Faith is real seeing.”

Looking more closely at the words assurance and conviction, commentators Moulton and Milligan indicate that assurance is a legal term which stands for “the whole body of documents bearing on the ownership of a person’s property, deposited in archives, and forming the evidence of ownership.” With this in mind, they suggest the first part of the definition be translated, “Faith is the title-deed of things hoped for.”

The word translated conviction in this instance means “a proof, that by which a thing is proved or tested.” Thayer defines it in this context as “that by which invisible things are proved and we are convinced of their reality.”

Faith gives stability, assurance, and inner conviction concerning all things which are not open to the physical senses, especially in the realm of salvation.
