As you read the book of Hebrews notice that the writer emphasizes that Jesus is greater than all who went before Him.  There’s been a significant emphasis on angels in recent years, even in the entertainment industry.  Jesus is greater than angels according to Hebrews 1:4.

Some venerate Moses.  He was a great man, a great leader.  But “Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses” (3:3).

The priests played an important role in Old Testament worship, especially the High Priest.  Jesus is greater than the Aaronic priesthood.  He also is greater than the High Priests who needed to sacrifice to cover their own sins before they could make sacrifices for the people.  As was already mentioned, innocent animals were sacrificed to cover the sins the people.  Even the High Priest had to make sacrifices for his own sins.  And the sacrifices he made for himself and the people had to be repeated.

The one sacrifice of Jesus was made once and didn’t need to be repeated.  It was greater than all the sacrifices made before Him put together.  Once He made this sacrifice Jesus went to heaven to minister as our High Priest in the perfect sanctuary.  It was greater than the earthly sanctuary, a mere copy of the heavenly.

The writer concludes his discussion of this in chapter 9 by saying in verse 15, “For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant.”  He is the one and only way into a new, meaningful and eternal relationship with God.  Have you put your trust in Him?  Let me encourage you to fix your eyes and heart on Him, for He is indeed the greatest!
