Did you know that some of the Psalm’s are prophetic?

Take Psalm 22. It starts with the words Jesus uttered while hanging on the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Notice also verses 6-8 which sound very much like Isaiah 53 and what is described in the Gospels as taking place around the cross: “But I am…scorned by men and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: ‘He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.’”

Verses 14-15 describe what authorities say are symptoms of crucifixion. Then verses 16-17 describe what specifically took place around the cross of Christ: “A band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”

As Psalm 22 closes the psalmist describes what Paul says in both Ephesians 1:20-23 and especially in Philippians 2:9-11: “God exalted him in the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

I’m not sure the psalmist knew that what he was writing would so clearly describe many of the details of Jesus Christ’s death and ultimate victory and glorification, but Jesus and those around him participated in their fulfillment, and likewise, will again in heaven.
