Let’s continue doing our inductive study of Psalm 5 to see how David cultivated his daily walk with the Lord, his king. Though he was king he lived in an antagonistic environment. Many around him lived in rebellion against God and His righteousness.

At times it is tempting to consider worldly advice. David knew this from personal experience. But he also knew what he says in Psalm 5:11-12: “Let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you; for surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.”

Up to this point he describes his daily walk with the Lord, his King. Now he expands his testimony to include all who take refuge in the Lord as their king. What he declared is like a benediction pronounced over them.

Everyone’s experience is unique because of what they encounter in life and what they bring to those encounters, but the Lord remains the same. He knew this is true from what he knew about Israel’s history. He also knew from what friends had shared with him about their experience when they trusted in God as their refuge.

There is reason to be glad and sing for joy when we experience the Lord’s protection. Spontaneous joy bursts forth in the hearts of those who have been blessed by God as He has surrounded them with His favor as with a shield.
