James refers to wisdom in verse 5 of chapter one in his book. Then in chapter 3:14-18 he amplifies his thoughts on wisdom.

There is earthly wisdom, characterized by envy and selfish ambition. It is of the devil, is unspiritual and leads to disorder and every kind of evil practice. This kind of wisdom is to be avoided by Christians.

Wisdom that comes from heaven in answer to prayer is pure, spiritual, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, impartial and sincere. When exercising this kind of wisdom you will see the good fruit of righteousness and peace.

How does one go about discovering and then exercising heavenly wisdom?  Based on what James says in his book, first recognize your need for such wisdom. If you think you can handle your situation on your own you’ll likely start using earthly rather than heavenly wisdom.

You need to count the cost. Exercising heavenly wisdom will often be misunderstood and even criticized. Ask yourself if you’re willing to face this kind of response. Then ask for the heavenly wisdom you need.

In your asking, search for it by studying the Bible. Psalm 119:98-100 says, “Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.” When asking God for this kind of wisdom be sure to trust the Holy Spirit to enable you to use it.

A wise person will show his wisdom by who he is – character, what he does – conduct, and by how he does it – humility.
