What an example the prophet Habakkuk was of the powerful truth God shared with him: “the righteous will live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:4).

Though almost overwhelmed by all God shared with him he declared by faith, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights” (Habakkuk 3:18-19).

This was a statement of faith before the Babylonian army attacked. It was before they would decimate the land, the temple and the people. It was before God would bring calamity on Babylon

This is the kind of faith described in Hebrews 11:1 & 6: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” The Living Bible puts it this way: “What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead.” Without this kind of faith “it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

He had seen the opposite take place over a period of about two decades. It is believed he served during the time of King Josiah’s revival. Josiah wanted to restore temple worship, but to do so he had to refurbish the run down temple. During the renovation work they found a copy of God’s Word. When it was read to Josiah he repented and committed himself to leading the people in repentance and a return to God. What a blessed time that must have been for the prophet and the people.
