One final reflection before we pull details of the book of Habakkuk together into an outline. Let’s consider the timing of all that Habakkuk discusses in his prophecy.

Most scholars believe the book was written about the end of the seventh century, just after the fall of the Assyrian empire and the rise of the Babylonian empire. Habakkuk was a contemporary of the prophet Jeremiah. Judah had deteriorated in morality and moral. Violence, injustice, strife and conflict prevailed throughout the land. When was God going to deal with these unrighteous conditions? Why, in the words of Habakkuk, did God seem to tolerate this evil? And how was God going to deal with it when He got around to acting?

Any believer asking these questions is probably asking them because they are becoming impatient with God. Peter talks about those who scoff at the promises of God that a day of reckoning is coming (2 Peter 3:3-9). He warns them: “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

The prophet obviously was impatient at first. Gradually he began to understand that God knew what He was doing. He had a timeline. As God unfolded His plan to the prophet He pointed out “the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay” (Habakkuk 2:3).

We are wise if we patiently wait on God to help us understanding His plan and then to submit to it.
