As we continue our study of the book of Habakkuk let me introduce you to another impact statement: “The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him” (Habakkuk 2:20).

This statement comes at the close of God’s answers to the prophet’s complaints and questions. The reason the prophet complained is because his understanding of God was too limited. His God was too small. What he believed about God was true, but not adequate to comprehend all God was intent on doing in the prophet’s world.

God knows how His dealings with one nation will impact other nations.  The poet John Donne was right who said, “No man is an island, entire of itself.” We tend to see things from where we stand. It’s hard to contemplate what is going on beyond the horizon.

Habakkuk had heard about the Babylonians and the nations they were decimating, but all of that was taking place beyond his horizon. The Lord who is seated in His holy temple in heaven can see beyond every horizon. He sees what is taking place in every nation and in every person’s life in every nation. He cares about all that is going on and how it will impact everyone.

So before we complain about how God is or is not dealing with what we are concerned about, it would be wise to bow in silence before our Sovereign Lord. Like the prophet Habakkuk learned, it is wise to stand at your watch and station yourself on the ramparts, and look to see what God will say to you (Habakkuk 2:1).
