Today I would like to start a “3C” Biographical Study of another Biblical character: John Mark. We know him better as just Mark. Yes, he is the one who wrote the Gospel of Mark.

To do this study we will again identify where you can find information about him. Once we’ve collected the information we will correlate it into an outline and then crystallize what we learn into some practical applications.

There is not much found about him in the Gospel of Mark, only one passing reference to “a young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, (who) was following Jesus. When they seized him, he fled naked, leaving his garment behind” (Mark 14:51-52). If this indeed refers to Mark, and many scholars believe it does, then he was an eye-witness to the arrest of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane

His Mother was Mary, who had a large home in Jerusalem, which was a gathering place for the believers (Acts 12:12). There is no mention of his father in the Bible, but Barnabas was his cousin. They were Jewish believers (Colossians 4:10). He was taken to Antioch by Paul and Barnabas and when they were sent on their 1st missionary journey he was taken along as a helper (Acts 13:5). The task became too much for him, or he got home-sick, and returned to Jerusalem (vs. 13).

As Paul and Barnabas began planning their 2nd missionary trip Barnabas wanted to take Mark with them, but Paul considered him a deserter and wanted nothing to do with him. So these two pioneers split and Barnabas took Mark under his wing, taking him to Cyprus. I believe Barnabas discipled him and prepared him for his life’s work (Acts 15:36-39).
