In our last visit we looked at verses 4 and 5 of Job chapter 1 and verse 4 of chapter 8. We spread out what we found about Job and his children. I suggested you; try sorting the information into groups so that we can structure the information into an outline. When I did this I came up with the following outline:

1. The relationship of the kids to each other.
2. The relationship of the kids to God.
3. The responsibility Job took for his kids.

Then I added sub-points to the outline. Under point one I noted that the sons shared what they had with each other and their sisters, and they all seemed to enjoy each other. But under point two, in their relationship with God, they seemed to be careless and needed their father’s encouragement to purify themselves after their parties. Under point three Job felt a spiritual responsibility to encourage his kids spiritually, and just in case they didn’t follow through wholeheartedly, he made a burnt offering for them.

The title I gave this outline was: Parental Care for the Spiritual Welfare of Adult Children.

The fourth step in the study approach is to summarize what we have found in some practical applications.

Parents should never get to the place where they are unconcerned for their children’s spiritual life, even when they are independent adults. And children should be appreciative of parents who care for them.

Having a good time sharing food and drink together is okay—but guard against carelessness. Carelessness often leads to sin.

Spiritual restoration should be encouraged whenever needed.
