In studying Matthew 24-25 we are encouraged to be ready for that day, which could be any day or crisis, or more specifically, the Day of the Lord. Chapter 25 presents three scenarios that highlight readiness for that day.

The first is the parable of the ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. They waited outside the place where the wedding celebration would take place. Five virgins were foolish because they took their lamps but no oil. The other five took oil with their lamps. All ten fell asleep while waiting for the bridegroom to come.

When he came they were aroused to meet him, but the foolish virgins’ lamps had gone out. The wise virgins were unwilling to share their oil with them. While they went to buy some oil the door to the banquet hall was closed. When they returned they were rejected entrance by the doorkeeper.

The poet Whittier was right when he wrote, “Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, it might have been!” They were not ready and missed the celebration.

Oil is used in the scriptures as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. This parable would thus illustrate that those who possess the Holy Spirit will be ready. Those who don’t will not be ready. Paul said in Romans 8:9, “If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.”

Foundationally, this means, to be ready for that day you need to come to Jesus Christ, in prayer commit yourself to Him and ask Him to save you and take over control of your life. He will, if you ask Him to do this.
