In our last visit we looked at Joel’s warning that calamity beyond what they already had experienced was on the way. Mixed with this dire prophecy was a message of hope based on the graciousness and compassion of God who loved them. He suggested that maybe God would relent from sending the predicted calamity, turn, have pity and leave behind a blessing.

He didn’t guarantee this would happen, but he did predict that if they truly repented God would “repay (them) for the years the locusts have eaten” (Joel 2:25). By this he meant that if they repented, even if God permitted them to experience the unintended consequences of their waywardness and indifference, He would in the end deal with the instruments of His discipline, and restore the Israelites to a place of blessing. They would again have abundant rains with fields producing good crops, the vines yielding their riches, and animals who would be satisfied with verdant, green pastures.

He promised that they would have plenty of reason to acknowledge God: “You will know that I am in Israel, that I am the Lord your God, and that there is no other” (Joel 2:27).

He continues his prophecy by promising that God would pour out His Spirit on all people and many will prophesy, dream dreams and see visions. This part of Joel’s prophecy was quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost, saying, “this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel” (Acts 2:14-21). Peter stopped short of saying Pentecost was the full realization of all Joel predicted, but it was a part of what he promised.

God was going to do a new thing.
