Today I’d like to begin a study of Isaiah 50. Let me suggest we use the focus and amplify study approach. Read the chapter a few times, possibly using different translations. Then ask yourself what you believe the focus is of the chapter? When I did this I thought it had to do with feeling abandoned.

The chapter begins with God asking a child whose mother was divorced where the certificate of divorce is? One of the deepest feelings of abandonment is experienced by children of divorce. They always seem to feel they’re to blame for their parent’s divorce. They have a love for both and don’t want to hurt either, but they don’t believe they can correct the problem. Another experience of abandonment is when you feel you are thrown into the hands of creditors without having the wherewithal to settle your debt.

This chapter gives some answers to those who feel abandoned by God. So I gave the chapter the title: God’s answers to those who feel abandoned by Him. That’s the focus. Now let’s see how that focus is amplified. I came up with three points.

The first is in the form of a question: If you feel abandoned by God, guess who moved away?

The second is an encouragement: If you feel abandoned by God, listen and look to Jesus and trust in Him.

The final point is a warning: If you feel abandoned by God, don’t keep doing things your own way.

You can amplify this basic outline further, based on what you find in the chapter. We’ll do that in subsequent visits.  Read over the chapter again in preparation for our next visit.
