A couple of months ago I did a study of Isaiah 53.  I noted that the message God assigned to Isaiah to proclaim was right on target and reflected what is said in Isaiah 6:9-10, “‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”

Notice the importance of hearing and seeing with an open heart. You can hear the message preached and see it lived out, but if you close your heart to what you hear and see it won’t help you.

Spiritual understanding involves more than intellectual absorption; that is, knowing the facts of the message or observing the message being lived out. Spiritual understanding involves the heart. And when the heart is calloused by repeated exposure without heart response you will become dull of hearing and your eyes will see as in a fog. That isn’t the fault of the messenger or the message – it’s the fault of the audience.

In fact, when the heart is responsive even to a message heard faintly or observed as in a fog, the power of the message to transform lives is amazing. Listen again to verse 10: “Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”

Billy Sunday was once chastised about his preaching, “You rub the fur the wrong way!” He responded, “No I don’t. Let the cat turn around!” That’s what is involved in true repentance.
