In recent visits we’ve been studying what Isaiah prophesied would be done by Jesus at the hands of His Father and His accusers. The things we’ve considered so far in our study of Isaiah 52:13-53:12 took place 2,000 years ago. Now let’s study what Isaiah predicted Jesus will do yet in the future.

Isaiah 52:15 says Jesus will “sprinkle many nations.” Commentators acknowledge that the Hebrew is not clear, but alternative renderings include, He will “cleanse many nations,” or “startle many nations.” The idea is that when kings and nations see Him as victor, because He sprinkles or cleanses their eyes, they will be startled by what they see.

They either didn’t look or listen, but then they will see and understand, and that will truly shake them up. Those who listened and believed, Jesus will justify according to 52:11. They will be considered righteous before God because Jesus paid the price for their forgiveness and acceptance when He bore their iniquities on the cross.

Verse 12 declares, Jesus “will divide the spoils with the strong.” The verse actually begins with the statement that God will give to Jesus “a portion among the great.” The picture is of Jesus being rewarded or honored by His Father in heaven for all He has done. Then, instead of keeping this reward for Himself, He divides it with the strong, or those who will be with Him in heaven. He is gracious and humble even in His moment of exaltation.

What a glorious picture of our wonderful Savior. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Phil. 2:5 KJV).
