In our last visit we considered what the prophet Isaiah said would be done to the suffering servant, Jesus Christ, according to Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12. Now let’s consider what Jesus Christ did, as seen through the prophetic eyes of Isaiah.

We read in verse 4, “He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows.” It’s as though we see a double exposure picture of Jesus putting the cross on His shoulders and at the same time taking up our infirmities and carrying our sorrows to the cross.

In verse 10 Isaiah says Jesus allowed Himself to become a guilt offering, which was necessary for the sin of the guilty to be forgiven. In verse 7 it describes how He responded when oppressed and afflicted – He didn’t open His mouth. And when he was led as a sheep before her shearers – again He was silent. Isaiah says in verse 12, “He poured out His life unto death…He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

It is clear, all of these things were done to Him by the Father and those who accused, beat, spit on and crucified Him. But it is also true that He took all of these things on Himself and courageously, sacrificially walked all the way to the cross to pour out His life unto death. He did it because He was bearing the sin of many, in their behalf, to the cross, to pay the penalty of their sin through His death.

While He was doing all this He interceded for the very ones who were doing this to Him. As the Hymn-writer Wesley put it, “Amazing love, how can it be, that Thou my God should’st die for me.” He did die for me! And you!
