Having studied Psalms 19 and 119 it is no wonder the book of Psalms begins with this admonition: “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”

Input determines output! Be careful who you go to for counsel. The warning in this opening statement in Psalm 1:1 is to avoid the counsel you could get from the wicked. Don’t even eaves-drop as you stand close to one who is a sinner. You might not be able to avoid hearing what a mocker is saying who happens to be sitting close by. Close your ears and change seats!

In our day this warning could include what you watch on television, listen to on the radio, come across in your google-ing on the internet, or reading in a publication. There are so many sources of information that it’s easy to experience information overload. And with all that information it’s hard to single out the kind of counsel God might want you to get.

Blessed is the man who has discovered God’s Word to be THE ULTIMATE SOURCE for counsel that will guide and enable you to walk in the light with confidence. When you seek counsel from God’s Word and you obey what it directs you to do you will be blessed as described in verse 2: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.   Whatever he does prospers.”

In our next visit we’ll pursue this more thoroughly.
